Citra satelit NASA pada 7-15 Oktober 2026 menunjukkan konsentrasi karbon monoksida (CO) yang tinggi di wilayah udara Indonesia. Sebarannya tampak luas, ditandai warna merah pekat yang menutupi atmosfer. Menurut keterangan NASA, warna oranye dan merah menunjukkan konsentrasi CO yang lebih tinggi, sedangkan biru dan ungu menandakan konsentrasi lebih rendah. NASA menjelaskan, karbon monoksida dilepaskan oleh kendaraan, gunung api, dan kebakaran hutan. Gas ini juga dihasilkan dari pembakaran tidak sempurna bahan bakar fosil dan kayu. Di atmosfer, CO berkontribusi terhadap pemanasan bumi melalui interaksinya dengan gas rumah kaca lainnya. Bagi manusia, paparan CO dalam kadar berbahaya dapat mengurangi kemampuan darah mengangkut oksigen ke organ vital. Tinjauan ilmiah Carbon Monoxide Poisoning: Pathogenesis, Management, and Future Directions of Therapy yang terbit di jurnal American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine pada 2017 menyebutkan, keracunan CO dapat menyebabkan sakit kepala, pusing, gangguan fungsi otak dan jantung, hingga koma dan kematian. Penyintas juga berisiko mengalami gangguan neurologis dan kognitif jangka panjang. Namun, peta satelit tersebut menggambarkan sebaran CO di atmosfer pada ketinggian sekitar 18.000 kaki atau 5,5 kilometer, bukan pengukuran langsung konsentrasi gas yang dihirup masyarakat di permukaan bumi.
