For such a simple concept, this shot took some real figuring out.
We landed on this idea in one of our first storyboarding sessions, something about a big loud close up of a skateboard wheel cruising over concrete seemed like a great way to start the film.
I wanted the shot level with the axle so hanging the camera off the side was much too high, looked into periscope lenses and then landed on the very affordable option of rigging an ikea acrylic mirror off the side of the board and mounting the camera on a little manfrotto head directly to the deck.
Thanks to the Komodo’s global shutter the shot didn’t turn into a vibrating jello-y mess.
I’m sure someone could come up with a much more elegant solution, but finally seeing this shot on the big screen was an incredible feeling.
