The Supreme Court on Monday (November 2) declined to urgently hear a plea challenging skyrocketing domestic airfares, with Justice Vikram Nath responding, “Don’t travel by air. Next case.” The remark came after a lawyer approached the court, alleging that flight ticket prices had surged by as much as 700%, particularly during festivals, holidays and periods of high demand. The advocate argued that air travel had become an essential service for millions of Indians and that such steep price increases violated Article 14 of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law. However, Justice Nath declined to take up the matter at that stage and moved on to the next case. The petition raised concerns over airlines’ dynamic pricing systems, under which ticket prices can rise dramatically within hours as demand increases. It sought regulatory guidelines to protect passengers from excessive and unpredictable fare hikes. Interestingly, the Supreme Court had earlier taken a different stance on the same broader issue. In January, Justice Nath had flagged the exploitation of passengers during festivals and major events, questioning why airlines were charging several times their usual fares. A separate PIL challenging arbitrary airline pricing is already pending before the Supreme Court. On October 16, the Centre informed the court that new aviation pricing rules had been finalised and approved. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on November 16. Importantly, the reported 700% increase was an allegation made before the court, not a figure independently established by the Supreme Court.
Rapper Chief Keef reportedly had no idea he was standing next to SteveWillDoIt, who showed up to @gamdom’s Halloween celebrations dressed as Robert Downey Jr.’s character Kirk Lazarus from the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder. Steve recreated the controversial movie character, complete with military fatigues, an afro and darkened skin, before taking photos with people throughout the event. The costume references Robert Downey Jr.’s Oscar-nominated performance, which famously satirized an actor undergoing a fictional skin pigmentation procedure to portray a Black soldier. The photo with Chief Keef has since added another layer to the Halloween controversy, with the internet debating whether the costume was a harmless movie reference or crossed the line. Would you have recognized Steve in that costume? 💀#SP
