It took 2 1/2 years just to vote on it. It was a fight worth fighting and in the end, the NIMBYS and misinformation won. We received death threats, neighbors yelling at us, pulling up fast like they were going to hit me....it was ugly. These same neighbors live right next door and claimed our land is a wetland miraculously there’s is not even tough we had The Army Corp of Engineer declare “NOT A WETLAND”.
Fortunately, we had Plan B all along for spec homes. However, this plan in some ways adds to the problem. This was for 100% local residents that had deed restrictions on it that you would have to sell to another local family. Selling close. to 200k below market. 140 families had to take classes just to able to get into a lottery. We considered reapplying after the fires and were in talks with the housing director until she resigned because bearing the brunt of the anger and threats. We decided it is going to be too difficult and costly to wade through what is coming for Maui. I hope and pray there is strong decisive leadership that will fast-track and create programs without the red tape length of time. Maui needs major help now!
