Tytan and Notty, paying their morning respects to Maxwell! Tytan spent a bit more time with his elder, perhaps wondering how a little black rhino like him grows to be so stately and impressive.

Because Max is blind, he has a forever home with us. Letting him roam free would be incredibly risky — Nairobi National Park is home to many wild black rhinos, who wouldn’t take kindly to a competitor lumbering into their territory. Instead, Max has his own spacious-and-secure grounds to lord over. Black rhinos are as solitary as they are territorial, so this arrangement suits him well. He enjoys his morning visitors, Keepers, and the wild warthogs who filter through, but is otherwise very content with his own company.

Because young Tyran will eventually be rewilded, we wouldn’t want to encourage or facilitate an overfamiliar relationship between the pair, as that wouldn’t serve him in his wild life. But for now, these little tête-à-têtes do no harm. (Notty the zebra, meanwhile, is just along for the ride!)

At 20 years old, Maxwell is the oldest orphaned rhino in our care. Because he is blind and couldn’t survive in the wild, he has a forever home with us. Read more about Max and support him through an adoption: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/maxwell

At just 21 months old, Tytan is the youngest rhino on our care. His mother died in a tragic accident, leaving him orphaned. Discover his story and support his journey back to the wild through an adoption: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/orphans/tytan

“Sweet Transgonzite” from The Rocky Horror Picture Show - There comes a night when autumn leaves
Are little letters from the trees
When every porch becomes a star
And dreams come wandering from afar

When witches wear their crooked hats
And moonlight makes philosophers of cats
When ghosts are only sheets of white
With giggling children tucked inside

A cardboard crown can make a king
A paper wand can change a thing
A bedsheet gives a child flight
And ordinary streets take flight

For one enchanted, fleeting eve
The world believes what children believe
That magic isn’t something lost
Or something bought at any cost

It’s in the courage of a child
Who greets the darkness with a smile
Who knocks upon a stranger’s door
And finds the world has something more

A little kindness, something sweet
A thousand wonders down the street
And grown-ups, watching from the stairs
Remember when the world was theirs

Perhaps that’s Halloween’s great art
To give imagination back its heart
To teach us what we used to know
That wonder lives where we let it grow

And when the costumes are put away
And November gathers up the day
May every child remember this
The world is larger than it is

For magic doesn’t end at dawn
Nor vanish when the masks are gone
It lives wherever hearts make room
For castles built from living rooms

And childhood, though its seasons fly
Leaves little lanterns in the sky
So all our lives, through joy and sorrow
