The future of cars just took a dramatic turn, and this time, it actually left the ground. Elon Musk has unveiled Tesla’s long-awaited next-generation Roadster, an electric supercar capable of jumping over vehicles, driving upside down and performing controlled aerial manoeuvres before landing safely. During a spectacular demonstration at SpaceX’s testing facility in McGregor, Texas, on October 15, the car performed stunts that looked straight out of a science-fiction movie.

In videos shared online, the futuristic Roadster can be seen climbing a massive curved ramp, sticking to its surface even while upside down, before launching itself into the air, rotating and landing on its wheels. In another demonstration, the vehicle lifted off and jumped over a lineup of Tesla vehicles. Musk celebrated the moment on X, writing, “Turns out the future does have flying cars.”

The technology behind these stunts comes from a collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. The Roadster uses powerful fans beneath its body to create suction, allowing it to grip surfaces, while specially designed cold-gas thrusters release highly compressed air to generate thrust. Unlike conventional rockets, these thrusters do not burn fuel. Tesla also demonstrated the car accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in approximately 0.8 seconds, although its performance claims have not been independently verified.

The new Roadster will reportedly come in three configurations: Performance, Thrust and Rocket. The invitation-only Rocket version is designed for the most extreme airborne manoeuvres but is not approved for public-road use. While the demonstration has sparked excitement, the vehicle has only shown brief, controlled flight rather than sustained flying capabilities.

Originally unveiled in 2017 and delayed repeatedly, the next-generation Roadster is now expected to enter production in 2028, not immediately. Tesla has yet to announce its final selling price. For now, Musk has shown the world a glimpse of a car that can do far more than drive, but whether it can safely bring those extraordinary abilities to everyday roads remains to be seen.

Hey everyone, sending you all a little love today. 🤍🫶🏻 How have you been? Tell me something good in the comments! 💌
