Shame on Those Police Officer and Journalists Who Fail to Recognise Jean Drèze, the Belgian-Born Economist Whose Work Has Helped Shape India’s Fight Against Poverty and Hunger

It is deeply embarrassing when journalists and police appear to ask Jean Drèze, “Who are you, where have you come from, and what do you do?” while he reportedly responds with a smile.

Jean Drèze is a Belgian-born economist and social scientist who became an Indian citizen and has contributed significantly to debates on poverty, hunger, employment guarantees and the Right to Information. His work has influenced public policy discussions, including the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA).

Yet public debate often gives greater recognition to political leaders and welfare announcements than to the researchers and activists who help shape policies for vulnerable communities.

Journalism should go beyond asking who someone is. It should also understand their work, contributions and public impact.

Question for the public: Should journalists be better informed about the people who have dedicated their lives to fighting poverty and defending social rights?

Dear Blizzard, here's how I'd make ogres playable in WoW Forever. Swipe for the full pitch. @warcraft

The race: the Mok'Nathal, Rexxar's half-orc, half-ogre people. Big enough to feel like ogres, small enough to fit through a door.

Their home: Brackenwall Village in Dustwallow Marsh, standing with the Stonemaul clan.

Earn your place: start alongside the orcs in Durotar, follow Rexxar west, then challenge Mok'Morokk and drive back Onyxia's brood.

Classes: Warrior, Hunter, Shaman, Mage and Warlock.

Two heads: Mages and Warlocks can choose one head or two at character creation, straight out of Warcraft II.

Racials: Thick Skull, Bladespire Endurance, Beast Bond and Unbroken.

This is a fan concept, not anything Blizzard has announced. The full video, with the lore and the case for and against, goes live on my YouTube channel on 11 October. Link in bio when it's up.

Would you roll one?
