A fresh controversy has erupted between Delhi Police and the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) after police released a video showing party founder Abhijeet Dipke declining offers to return home or contact his family following his grandmother’s death, contradicting allegations made by the party and his relatives.

In the video released on Sunday, October 11, a female police officer is seen informing Dipke about his grandmother’s demise while he was in detention. Visibly distressed, Dipke lowers his head before acknowledging the news. Another officer subsequently offers to arrange transportation, including flights or buses, to help him reach his hometown in Maharashtra for the last rites.

When asked whether he wanted to leave, Dipke responds, “I will stay.” The officer repeats the question, but Dipke maintains his decision. Police then offer to connect him with his relatives through an official phone, to which he responds that he does not remember their numbers.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Neha Yadav said officers had approached Dipke immediately after learning about the death and repeatedly offered assistance with travel arrangements and family communication. According to police, Dipke declined these offers.

The footage was released after CJP leaders and Dipke’s family accused Delhi Police of withholding information about his grandmother’s death and preventing him from attending her funeral. His mother, Anita Dipke, had also questioned the police’s account, claiming the family struggled to contact him.

However, Dipke has challenged the police’s version, alleging that officers refused to return his mobile phone even briefly so he could retrieve his cousin’s number. He also claimed that his request to contact a lawyer was denied. Dipke further questioned why officers allegedly wanted him to call his father at 3:30 am and inform him about the possibility of prolonged imprisonment, despite the family’s bereavement.

Dipke’s 85-year-old grandmother, Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, died on Saturday in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district. He had been detained alongside CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka.
