In November 1948, American political cartoonist Herbert Block, better known as Herblock, drew Down Stairway, warning about the dangers of making anti-communism the sole focus of politics. The cartoon appeared during the early Cold War, as tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were growing. Communism was spreading across Eastern Europe, and fears of communist influence were becoming a major force in American politics. Herblock illustrated how this fear could lead people down a dangerous path: first treating communism as the only political threat, then accepting fascists as allies because they opposed communism, and eventually viewing democracy itself as the enemy.
