Breaking Bad has been crowned the best television show of the 21st century so far in a massive new ranking released by The New York Times, beating some of television’s most celebrated productions including The Wire, Mad Men, Succession and Game of Thrones. The ranking was created after 516 actors, writers, showrunners, craftspeople, executives and other television industry professionals were asked to submit up to 10 of their favourite shows. Any multi-episode series, irrespective of language or format, was eligible as long as it debuted on or after January 1, 2000. Vince Gilligan’s Breaking Bad, starring Bryan Cranston as chemistry teacher-turned-drug kingpin Walter White and Aaron Paul as Jesse Pinkman, secured the No. 1 position. It was followed by The Wire and Mad Men, while Succession and Fleabag completed the top five. Game of Thrones came sixth, followed by Veep, 30 Rock, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Atlanta. Other fan favourites also made the cut, although sometimes much lower than viewers might expect. The Office (US) ranked 11th, Chernobyl 19th, Black Mirror 26th, Better Call Saul 27th, Peaky Blinders 43rd, Stranger Things 53rd, Squid Game 72nd, The Bear 74th and Modern Family 77th.
For decades, women described symptoms that medicine dismissed. We cannot make that mistake again.
