i have dreaded this day since i started playing soccer 18 years ago. this sport has never been just a game to me. it has served as joy in sadness, light in darkness, a sense of purpose when i felt lost, and an escape when i felt overwhelmed by life. i could’ve never dreamed about the ways that a sport would shape me, but today as i reflect on all the ways it did, i can’t help but feel grateful. to soccer, thank you for all the ways you loved me back. to my family and the people who watched me grow from the little girl in a netherlands jersey to the person i am today, thank you for cheering me on whistle to whistle. and to the Lord, thank you for this gift. I think you knew how much i needed soccer.
