Send this to someone who loves Jaffa oranges. Around the 1840s, near Jaffa, Palestinian farmers found a new orange: oval, sweet, thick-skinned, almost seedless. They called it Shamouti. The world called it the Jaffa orange. Jaffa shipped about 200,000 oranges in 1845 and around 38 million by 1870. By the 1930s citrus was Palestine's biggest export. In 1948 the people of Jaffa were driven from their city and their groves. The name on the crates stayed. Palestine, Before. Episode 2. Episode 1, the newspaper called Palestine, is on my profile. Next: the cinema that lit up Jaffa's nights. Who in your family still talks about the oranges? My story, my words, my voice, recreated digitally. Jaffa orange history, Shamouti orange, Palestine before 1948, Jaffa 1948, Ghassan Kanafani Land of Sad Oranges, Palestinian history
