Islamists and communists sometimes cooperate despite having fundamentally incompatible ideologies because they share certain political enemies and short-term objectives. Classical Marxism regards religion as a product of material conditions that should eventually disappear in a communist society, whereas Islamism seeks to organize political and social life around Islamic principles. These goals are ultimately irreconcilable. Nevertheless, both movements have historically opposed Western imperialism, capitalism, and particular secular or Western-aligned governments. This creates opportunities for tactical alliances, especially in revolutionary movements, anti-colonial struggles, and opposition politics. The Iranian Revolution of 1979 is a prominent example, when Islamist organizations and Marxist groups temporarily united against the Shah despite their profound ideological differences.
These alliances are generally pragmatic rather than philosophical. Each side may believe cooperation will help defeat a common opponent, after which it can pursue its own vision of society. In Iran, the alliance rapidly collapsed after the revolution, with the new Islamic Republic suppressing communist and other leftist organizations. However, the theological premise requires clarification: Islam does not universally teach that every person must become Muslim before final salvation. Islamic traditions differ on the fate of non-Muslims, although many Islamist movements seek the political supremacy of Islamic law. Likewise, communists differ in their approaches to religion, with some advocating militant atheism and others tolerating religious practice. Ultimately, cooperation between Islamists and communists demonstrates how political movements can temporarily prioritize shared adversaries over their incompatible long-term objectives.
