Apple’s new CEO, John Ternus, is on the cover of TIME’s 2026 Best Inventions issue with the company’s new iPhone Duo. It’s his exclusive first cover interview as CEO.

Ternus’s predecessor, Tim Cook, cast himself as a global power broker deftly navigating global politics, markets, and supply chains. Cook’s predecessor, Steve Jobs, was a rock-star visionary.

Ternus is a private, detail-oriented engineer who only became visible on Apple stages after he became a senior hardware executive in 2021.

Rather than try to replicate Cook and Job’s styles of success, Ternus has so far played to his own strengths, positing Apple as a company that builds beautiful products that spark productivity, creativity, and joy.

His promotion coincided with the announcement of the Duo: the company’s new and long-awaited foldable phone. It’s Apple’s first major design change to the iPhone since its 2007 release.

At the link in bio, we speak to Ternus about Duo; along with Apple’s approach to geopolitical tensions and supply chains, child safety, and artificial intelligence.
