What’s the hype about probiotics and pets?? Are they necessary and do they work? Many describe probiotics as the “good” bacteria that can be given to help restore or support gut health. What many may not know is depending on the strain of bacteria, they can do so much more such as promoting a strong immune system and even interacting with the gut brain axis to help with anxious behaviors in our pets. One of the most challenging aspects of using a probiotic is choosing the right one.
Here are my quick tips when evaluating a probiotic:
🦠 One size does not fit all. There are different types of bacteria that are used and depending on strain may determine its effects. Make sure you can properly identify the bacteria with a first, middle and last name(genus, species and strain)!
🦠 Probiotics are considered dietary supplements which means that there are limited regulations. Data on quality control, safety and effectiveness may be spotty as a result of this. It’s up to the individual manufacturers to conduct trials and ensure safety measures are present.
🦠 Viability of the probiotic is key. The beneficial bacteria being used has to make the incredible journey from the mouth to the colon without being destroyed. This is difficult and the only way to know its success is through efficacy studies!!
Now I currently use probiotics in both of my pets and will recommend for many of my patients. If you think your pet should be on a probiotic, talk with your veterinarian to discuss which ones they advise! ♥️🐾🩺
