HEART OF STONE My first time inside a quarry, standing inside a mountain. Marble underfoot, overhead, everywhere. The movement of the stone flowing through it all in one continuous gesture. I felt so small. Nature on this scale is almost impossible to take in. My team and I came to Bergamo with @arca.ww to select stone for my studio’s project, sending slab photos back to the studio in real time. We’re studying dimensions and thickness, exploring cuts that give the stone depth and reveal its movement from different angles. Thinking through where that movement continues across a joint, where it turns a corner, and where a change in direction could create something unexpected. I’ve worked with stone for years. Seeing it here, at its source, was humbling in a way I hadn’t expected. More from Carrara soon.
