French documentary filmmaker Valentin Hénault recalled sharing a cell in Gorakhpur District Jail with a prisoner known as “The Ghost,” who spoke little and suffered from poor health. In a video posted on Instagram on September 24, Hénault said he later learned the prisoner was Parvez Parwaz, a Muslim journalist who had pursued legal action over a 2007 speech by Yogi Adityanath.
Hénault was reportedly arrested during a visit to India after attending an Ambedkar People’s March advocating Dalit land rights. He was accused of violating visa rules and spent around a month in Gorakhpur jail.

Parwaz, a 72-year-old former journalist and social activist, died in the jail on Sunday while serving a life sentence in a separate gangrape case. Jail officials said he had high blood pressure and diabetes and died after experiencing breathing difficulties.

Parwaz had sought an investigation into Adityanath’s alleged role in inciting violence following a speech in Gorakhpur in 2007. He was arrested in 2018 after a woman accused him and another man of gangrape and was sentenced to life imprisonment in July 2020.
