What happens when journalists dare to ask uncomfortable questions? Journalist Raghav Trivedi recalls being brutally assaulted, allegedly by BJP workers, while covering Amit Shah's rally in Rae Bareli in 2024. He was beaten, labelled a Muslim because of his long hair and beard, and subjected to communal slurs. According to his account, police personnel were present, yet nobody stepped forward to protect him. All because he dared to question what was happening at a political rally. This is the reality independent journalists in India are increasingly forced to confront. When asking questions comes with the threat of violence, and those responsible escape immediate accountability, press freedom itself is at stake. A democracy cannot function when journalists are intimidated into silence.
