AISA president Neha Bora said young people were angry over what she described as the normalisation of communal and caste-based hatred under the BJP-RSS. She cited mob lynchings of Muslims, violence against Dalits and the release of the convicts in the Bilkis Bano case.
Bora also criticised the alleged impunity enjoyed by figures such as Yati Narsinghanand and accused the BJP of shielding leaders facing sexual assault allegations, including Kuldeep Singh Sengar, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh and Prajwal Revanna. She said young people’s anger against such incidents and what she described as political complicity would not be silenced.

On October 16, 1995, hundreds of thousands of people gathered on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., for the historic Million Man March — one of the largest gatherings centered on Black life, unity and empowerment in modern American history.

Led by Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan and supported by Black leaders and organizations from across the country, the march called on Black men to recommit themselves to their families, their communities and one another while confronting racism, economic inequality and the challenges facing Black America.

And despite the name, women were part of the historic day too.

Rosa Parks, Maya Angelou, Betty Shabazz, Dorothy Height and Queen Mother Moore were among the prominent Black women who appeared as major speakers, while other women were also present in Washington supporting the gathering.

Attendance estimates varied, but there is no question that the images of the National Mall packed with people became one of the defining scenes of Black organizing in the 1990s.

More than three decades later, the Million Man March remains a reminder of what can happen when Black communities organize around accountability, family, economic power and collective action.
