A boy, a lifeboat, and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker, adrift together on an ocean that looks like the inside of God's imagination. Life of Pi (2012) is Ang Lee's Oscar-winning visual miracle, the adaptation Hollywood called unfilmable for a decade, transformed into one of the most breathtaking survival stories ever brought to the screen and capped by a final question that quietly rearranges everything you just watched. The mood is wonder floating on grief. After a shipwreck swallows his family and their zoo animals in the Pacific, sixteen-year-old Pi Patel, played in a stunning debut by Suraj Sharma, finds himself sharing twenty-six feet of lifeboat with four hundred and fifty pounds of apex predator, and the film becomes a duel, then a truce, then something dangerously close to love between species.
