Damn gotcha questions and fake issues, anything to avoid the issues voters actually care about. It's almost like they want to tank their own elections.

Germany’s 5 largest cities (Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Cologne and Frankfurt) are spread across the country in a way that reflects Germany’s unusually decentralized history.

Unlike France or Britain, Germany did not develop for centuries around one dominant capital. Before German unification in 1871, the region was divided among kingdoms, duchies, free cities and other states, allowing multiple urban centers to grow independently. Germany’s federal structure still reflects those older regional traditions.

Each of these cities became important for a different reason. Berlin grew as the capital of Prussia and later unified Germany; Hamburg became a major Hanseatic trading port; Munich was the capital of Bavaria; Cologne developed from an ancient Roman and medieval Rhine trading center; and Frankfurt became a major commercial, banking and trade-fair city.

That helps explain why Germany remains economically polycentric today rather than being dominated by a single city.
