VUCA is a term the military invented in the 80’s. It stands for Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. The Davos business leadership set co-opted the term, but as we are seeing, it belongs to the military, because it’s a major threat to global peace. The pace of VUCA has been substantially increasing since the 1980’s, with the business leadership set recently saying things like “workers will have to adapt to a new economy where they will change jobs 17 times in their careers.” News flash: humans are not biologically equipped to handle rapid change. Rapid VUCA has us reacting and behaving from fear, the most powerful of all human emotions, but the one that brings out the worst parts of our nature. I believe we are capable of being better than our fear allows, but not without support. Today, connect with someone you’ve been thinking about but haven’t spoken to in a while. Check in. Ask for help; receive help when it’s offered. We are only as good and healthy as our relationships and connections; we need each other always, not just now, but now more than ever. And try to notice at least one small beautiful thing today, or laugh at one stupid joke. Fear is powerful, but joy is transformative, if we can find it. Look for it. Sending you all love, -K.
