Playboi Carti’s influence on fashion goes far beyond the outfits he wears. Throughout his career, he has helped shape how an entire generation approaches personal style, moving from the rare streetwear and skinny jeans of his early days to the dark, experimental aesthetic associated with his Opium era. During his early streetwear era, Carti embodied the intersection of underground streetwear, designer fashion and skate culture, embracing labels like Raf Simons, Supreme, and Rick Owens. With Whole Lotta Red, he pushed his image in a darker direction, bringing gothic imagery, punk influences, leather, dramatic silhouettes and vampiric styling further into the conversation around rap fashion. That evolution continued through Opium, where all black fits, distressed denim, statement accessories, unconventional proportions and a rebellious approach to luxury became part of a recognizable visual identity. His influence extends beyond his own wardrobe, helping shape the aesthetic of artists around him and inspiring fans to adopt the look themselves. Carti didn’t invent these subcultures, but he helped introduce their influences to a new generation through hip-hop, turning fashion into an extension of his music and the world he has built around it. His impact can be seen in how fans dress, discover brands and use personal style to express their identity. How much do y’all think Carti has influenced fashion?

Today we’re listening to Elegies in C minor: (Opus 1) Qula Kwedini by the late Zim Ngqawana. Ngqawana was a remarkable composer and multi-instrumentalist whose music brought jazz into conversation with Xhosa musical traditions. He drew on his cultural heritage alongside his spiritual and philosophical interests. His work moved between intricate compositions and free improvisation. Interestingly, Batsumi’s Itumeleng, released in 1974, is the original recording sampled in Ngqawana’s track. Decades later, The Brother Moves On returned to Batsumi’s music with Itumeleng Revisited, bringing it into conversation with a new generation of South African musicians. Elegies in C minor: (Opus 1) Qula Kwedini draws on the traditional Xhosa song Kula kweDini, associated with important communal events surrounding initiation. As described in the National Museum’s account of Mzigojo’s solo exhibition, the sacred song is traditionally sung to herald events such as the return of young men from initiation school. Other accounts also connect it to stick-fighting traditions and the passage into manhood. Ngqawana’s interpretation brings this cultural heritage into a jazz setting. Many of the artists I’ve already spoken about here were once members of his band! 16/31 Days of Jazzober! 🧑🏾‍🍳🎷 #jazz #southafricanjazz #africanjazz #afrojazz #zimngqawana
