Will Himachal Pradesh Get New Districts?

The Himachal Pradesh government has started reviewing the state's administrative structure, bringing the long-standing demand for new districts back into focus.

Dehra, Nurpur and Palampur in Kangra, Sundernagar in Mandi, Rampur in Shimla and Baddi in Solan are among the areas where demands for separate district status have been raised.

A commission will review the state's administrative arrangements over the next six months. The review will examine population, geographical conditions, public convenience and administrative requirements. It will also consider the need for new tehsils, subdivisions and changes to development blocks.

Creating new districts could bring government offices closer to residents and make public services more accessible. However, it would also require additional staff, infrastructure and financial resources.

No new district has been officially announced so far. With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the key questions are whether Kangra or Mandi could be divided and which areas might receive district status.
