Andhra Pradesh police shot and seriously injured Hemanth alias Dummu, the 21-year-old man accused of attacking a Class 10 schoolgirl with a chainsaw, after he allegedly attempted to escape police custody on Sunday, November 1. According to reports, a special police team located Hemanth in the Atmakur forest area of Anantapur district. He was being taken to Raptadu to reconstruct the crime scene when he allegedly tried to flee and began throwing stones at police personnel. Several officers reportedly sustained injuries while attempting to overpower him. Police subsequently opened fire in self-defence to stop his escape. According to an official cited by Hindustan Times, officers fired six rounds, leaving Hemanth seriously injured. He was taken to the Government General Hospital in Anantapur for treatment. His condition was reported to be serious. Hemanth is accused of brutally attacking Gopika Lakshmi, a Class 10 student, inside her classroom at Raptadu Zilla Parishad High School on Saturday, October 31. The attack allegedly took place after she rejected his advances and threatened to inform her parents. The assault left Gopika with severe injuries, while another student, Lakshmi, was injured when she tried to intervene. The incident triggered widespread outrage and raised serious questions about student safety inside educational institutions. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu had condemned the attack and directed officials to ensure the victim received the best possible medical treatment. The latest development comes as police continue investigating the brutal assault. Hemanth remains hospitalised under police supervision, with further details about his condition awaited.
