🚨 MUMBAI, ARE WE BREATHING POISON? 🌫️

The city that never sleeps is struggling to breathe. But could the air we breathe every day be putting our lives at risk? 🫁

🔬 A landmark study led by Professor Charles Swanton at the Francis Crick Institute and University College London (UCL) revealed a crucial link between air pollution and lung cancer, including in people who have never smoked.

Published in Nature in 2023, the research analysed data from more than 400,000 people and investigated how tiny air pollution particles, known as PM2.5, may promote the growth of lung cells that already carry cancer-causing mutations.

The scientists found that pollution-related inflammation can essentially “wake up” these cells, potentially allowing tumours to develop.

⚠️ This means lung cancer isn’t just a concern for smokers. Air pollution is also an important risk factor.

Now think about Mumbai — the traffic, construction dust, industrial emissions and the polluted air millions of people breathe daily.

Are we paying enough attention to the air entering our lungs?

Clean air is not a luxury. It’s a basic human necessity. We need stronger pollution control, greater accountability and urgent action to protect public health. 🌱

👇 Do you believe Mumbai’s air pollution crisis is being taken seriously enough?

Indian para-swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh, a former world No. 1 and international gold medallist, has been detained by Japanese police and sent back to India following allegations of sexually harassing a female hotel employee during the ongoing Asian Para Games 2026 in Nagoya. The 40-year-old athlete now faces a possible lifetime ban from representing India, with the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) recommending strict disciplinary action.

According to The Times of India, the incident allegedly occurred on Monday, October 19, at the Four Points by Sheraton hotel, where the Indian para-swimming contingent was staying. A female housekeeping employee was performing her duties inside Shaikh’s room when he allegedly touched her inappropriately, attempted to grope her, made sexually suggestive gestures and unwanted advances.

The employee reportedly rushed out of the room and informed her superiors, prompting hotel management to contact Japanese police. Officials from the local organising committee and the Indian delegation were subsequently informed. Shaikh was taken to a local police station for questioning.

According to reports, the local organising committee intervened to prevent a formal arrest, while the Indian delegation submitted a written apology to the employee. Shaikh was subsequently released, moved to another hotel and sent back to India on Tuesday, October 20, before he could participate in his scheduled swimming events.

The PCI has confirmed that India’s Chef de Mission has recommended the strictest disciplinary action, including a lifetime ban. In its statement, the committee reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct and said further action would be taken after the Games, following established procedures. No final ban has been imposed yet.

His third consecutive Asian Para Games appearance has now ended without him competing, as the allegations cast a shadow over his sporting career and India’s contingent.
