Postpartum psychosis affects around 1 in 500 women, but those are only the women who are diagnosed so in reality it is even more common than this.

On my @drlouisenewsonpodcast this week, @jadealloyd shared what happened when she asked for help after her daughter was born and she experienced mood changes. She told her GP at her six-week check that she didn't feel OK and was passed on to her health visitor, and when she later said she was having suicidal thoughts, she was told to have a glass of wine, some chocolate and a bath.

Jade went on to develop postpartum psychosis and was admitted to a mother and baby unit, yet no one ever mentioned the sharp fall in estradiol and progesterone that happens after birth. I speak to so many women who have never told their doctor how they're feeling because they're frightened their baby will be taken away.

We have known for decades that women’s mental heatlh can improve when they are prescribed bioidentical hormone treatments - yet psychiatirsts hardly even prescribe hormone treatments. This makes no sense to me.

If you're struggling with your mental health after having a baby, then speak to your GP, health visitor or perinatal team, and make sure to mention hormones and hormone treatments. If they are not listening then you should consult with another healthcare professional.

Listen to the full conversation now via the link in my bio.
