In 2018, a Reddit community called r/badUIbattles emerged as a place where programmers competed to create the most hilariously inconvenient user interfaces imaginable. Inspired by an earlier trend of intentionally terrible volume sliders, the subreddit turned bad design into a creative challenge. Developers began submitting absurd inventions, including volume controls that require typing digits of pi, phone number fields operated by sliders, checkboxes that only work half the time, and birthday selectors that force users to solve guessing games. The goal was never to make something useful, but to see how unnecessarily complicated the simplest digital tasks could become. Over time, these deliberately frustrating creations went viral, showcasing just how inventive programmers can be when they abandon every principle of good design. Follow @esc8pe.reality for more
