How do you film and photograph a behaviour that has never been documented before? For our team, the answer was three years of tracking and creative problem-solving in the field.

This is the story behind “Urban Architect”—Marie Bell’s (@mariekbell) photograph recognized at this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the Natural History Museum (@nhm_wpy #WPY62), which shows a magpie stealing a coat hanger to build its nest.

The Formosan Blue Magpie is one of only two known birds in the world—alongside the crows in Tokyo—documented using metal coat hangers to build nests. While Taipei residents occasionally spotted these strange nests, this stealing behaviour had never been fully documented before this photo.

Proving it on camera took our crew three years of fieldwork for our upcoming feature documentary Wild Taipei (@wildtaipeifilm). In this clip, Marie shares what it really took: building a network of local tip-offs and reacting in seconds to document this incredible behaviour on film and photos for the very first time.

Having our work shown at the Natural History Museum is a huge milestone, but this image is just one chapter of what we have filmed and photographed for Wild Taipei.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY)
