Well, this has popped off on Threads, so I thought I’d bring it here too, with a little Bible study of our own Obviously, the carousel is tongue in cheek. I have a lot of respect for people of all faiths, and this isn’t about having a go at Christians. What I loathe is seeing Christianity, and the Bible, manipulated to justify hatred and division. There’s a difference between being Christian and Christian nationalism. Christian nationalism is a political movement that uses Christianity to claim that a country, its laws and its identity should belong to one particular version of Christianity. It often seems to come with a very selective reading of the Bible: lots of certainty about who to condemn or exclude, and much less to say about welcoming the stranger, caring for people in need or loving your neighbour. I can’t imagine that good Christians look at the Bible and find Jesus condemning people for seeking safety or a better life. When politicians use Christianity to turn people against immigrants, LGBTQ+ people or other marginalised groups, it feels like faith is being used as a cover for division. We see that same convenient reach for religion elsewhere, too, including men accused of violence against women suddenly presenting themselves as godly men. Proverbs literally names stirring up division as something the Lord hates, and yet people who stir up culture wars claim to care about Christian values. So perhaps before using the Bible to decide who deserves compassion, it’s worth asking whether our own actions are bringing people together or turning people into targets. Party leaders who preach Christian values while stoking hatred towards people on benefits or people because of their immigration status might want to ask themselves the same thing. Anyway, welcome to the book club. We’re just looking at a few passages that seem to get missed when people are busy telling everyone else what “Christian values” mean.
