Como é o nome desse corte? What’s the name of that cut?

✌🏼years spent with my best buddy!!! YOU are the best thing, i adore you💛💛

Have you heard of the fast-track Bendigo-Ophire mine project?

If you live in Aotearoa, it’s worth paying attention to!

I live in Cromwell, a beautiful town in Central Otago that is ~20km downstream of the proposed Bendigo–Ophir gold mine, proposed by the largely Australian owned Santana Minerals.

This will be a massive open-cast gold mine that will involve processing facilities, piles of waste rock, cyanide, arsenic, and a tailings dam for the 18 million cubic metres of toxic waste left after extracting the gold.

The company says it would bring jobs and money into the region, but after research I’m not so sure this logic holds up… and I think we need to be seriously talking about what it could actually cost the community, and Aotearoa at large.

There are concerns about noise and light pollution, fossil fuel use, changes to public access, tolls on local infrastructure, and impacts on local industry. That’s not to mention the risk of water pollution through seepage for the 22,000 people who draw their water from nearby the clutha, and the toxic waste that will be left sitting in the tailings dam.

There’s also the habitat destruction that will put 500,000 protected lizards and skinks at risk, and be a potential extinction event for an endangered native plant (ceratocephala pungens).

The consequences wouldn’t end when mining stops and Santana packs off back overseas, they’ll be sitting upstream of our community for decades, if not generations to come.

To top it all off, the project is being considered through fast-track legislation, an anti-democratic process which bypasses public consultation, overrides established environmental laws, and sidelines local communities and iwi.

As a Cromwell local, I’m seriously concerned about what we stand to lose, and who carries the risks after the gold is gone.

I’ll be sharing more about this proposal, because our community deserves to understand what’s at stake, so follow along to learn more about the risks of this mine and check out the links in my bio for further information.
