Babies hold their breath when they are blown on due to an innate reflex known as the diving reflex.
This reflex is a natural protective reaction that occurs in infants and animals to safeguard vital functions when they come into contact with sudden cold or air currents.
How does it work?
💨Holding their breath: Blowing on a baby’s face can stimulate the sensitive skin nerves, triggering a reflex reaction in the brain, causing the baby to briefly hold their breath.
💨 Reduced heart rate: In connection with the diving reflex, the heart rate may also slow down to minimize oxygen consumption.
💨 Evolutionary protective mechanism: This reflex is particularly helpful if a baby accidentally ends up underwater, as holding their breath prevents water from being inhaled
