This basement on Osborne Terrace was my first home. Newark, NJ—where the burden was loud, the air was heavy, and the struggle was real. I remember the late nights my mother worked, the times she left us with my aunt and uncle upstairs, doing everything she could to get us out. The basement wasn’t just where we lived—it was where people came to escape, to fall deeper, to lose themselves. I saw the empty crack bottles, smelled the urine at the end of our hall, and knew even as a kid… this wasn’t where I wanted to stay.

But struggle builds strength. Pressure creates beauty. Just like in art, the hardest moments shape the masterpiece. There were times where I almost became a product of my environment, but instead, I let it fuel me. My mother’s fight, her sacrifices, her unwavering belief that we could have more—that’s why I’m here today.

Every brushstroke I lay down, every piece I create, carries the echoes of where I’ve been and the gratitude for where I am now.

This is more than art. It’s proof that we are not defined by where we start, but by how we choose to rise.
