🦚A NEW START 🦚
By God’s grace, I’ve been carrying Paalkudam since I was 9 years old, and soon it will be 20 years. Until last year, I never thought about changing the tradition. But this year, after learning about the benefits of offering different fluids instead of milk, I decided to carry sugarcane juice. I asked acha to bring it made from the SUGARCANE JUICE in our own orchard. Just because I’m away in KL, I paid acha because I wanted to feel fulfilled not just take it for free.
It was such a beautiful experience offering sugarcane juice from our own orchard to my Murugar. My parents and I worked together and the extra effort we put into it made it feel so fulfilling. Carrying the juice from Attangarai Batu Caves to Batu Caves hilltop felt incredibly special. My parents brought the juice the day before. Then we did prayers at home and later we made our way to Batu Caves.
The crowd was massive, and although we arrived at 12 AM, we didn’t park until 2:45 AM. We waited for almost 3 hours before heading up the hilltop and finishing by 7 AM. After pouring, the remaining juice in the pot, we drank it, and it was sweet and still perfect. It didn’t spoil at all which felt like a miracle. Truly it was a blessing.
When the priest poured the sugarcane juice on my Murugar and Vel I felt overwhelmed with gratitude. Watching that moment was indescribably beautiful, and I can’t fully explain it. It was a moment I’ll never forget, not only for me but also for my parents, who were so happy to see the change.
I’m looking forward to trying something different next year. Maybe I’ll even cut the sugarcanes myself and make the juice fresh. Let’s see how my Murugar guides me. I usually don’t carry my phone during Paalkudam to keep the moment sacred, so I don’t have any pictures or videos of the process. But I wanted to share this experience in hopes it will inspire others to try something new, just like I did after seeing others last year.
