![One of Bollywood's catchiest disco songs arguably had even greater success in a completely different country.
This is the story of how the song 'Jimmy Jimmy Jimmy Aaja' from the soundtrack to the 1982 Bollywood film Disco Dancer (produced by prolific bollywood music producer Bhappi Lahiri) became an unmitigated success in the Soviet Union.
It has even been suggested that the song became so integral to Soviet society, a common hit even at weddings, that the song could be used by Soviets as a test of potential foreign spies, to see if someone truly grew up in the USSR. Whether this was truly done or is simply an urban legend, it's amazing how popular an indian movie's climactic dance song became in an entitely different country, language and culture.
A special shout out to my friends at the @therevolverclub for finding me this copy of the soundtrack on vinyl! Be sure to listen out for it in my upcoming sets 🤙
