And I am 46.
No, not 47, just 46. Im mentally prepared to skip past an unremarkable year. If the last three years have been a series of transitions, then this year feels like a new beginning. The interlude has finally concluded, and a new chapter begins.

I tend to be dismissive of beginnings. They tend to just show up expecting accolades in the first part of life. But this one was earned. I'm working full time as a welder, which I don't know if anyone saw coming. The good health insurance kicks in next month. I quit vaping, and I've been nearly sober since last Halloween; that feels unremarkable and yet noteworthy. Gym routine and meal prep are consistent and having the effect I want. My refrigerator is regularly full of home cooked meals, and I take care of my space with a list of chores divided over the week. I've served almost a dozen chocolate cakes to friends, and I have handful of seasonal traditions that are a few years old. Throw in a smattering of dinners, early bar nights, dances, concerts, plays, and gallery exhibitions, and that's my life

I like it. It feels stable; it feels consistent. It is a peace worth protecting, even if it feels ordinary. I might need to treat myself like a reasonably well behaved teenager who needs direction, but I'm actually doing the things I want to do. This is what it looks like when my care and attention are focused on myself and the things I value. It might just feel like love.

I do worry about being too rigid; that I'll feel like this structured life is too small and uneventful, while reminding myself that I went hiking for two days out of state last weekend, and saw a concert in the middle of the week, and having a small get together this weekend. I have endured worse for less. So, yeah, I'll be fine. I can have a structured quiet year, working towards my goals, and enjoying a steady foundation that I can settle into.
