GREG JONES WAS A 250+ POUND NIGHTMARE THAT DEFENDERS HAD TO DEAL WITH EVERY SATURDAY. 😭

There was a time when Florida State had a running back who didn’t care whether you knew the ball was coming his way. You could stack the box, bring an extra linebacker, and have your entire defense waiting for him.

GOOD LUCK STOPPING HIM. Greg Jones was an absolute MONSTER during his time in Tallahassee.

At 6’1” and roughly 250 pounds during his college career, Jones had the size of a linebacker but could move like a much smaller running back.

Across four seasons at Florida State (2000–2003):

2,535 rushing yards, 23 rushing touchdowns, 5.3 yards per carry, 938 rushing yards in 2002, & 5.8 yards per carry during that 2002 season

Think about that last number.

A running back built like a defensive end was averaging nearly SIX yards every time he touched the football during his best season. And he wasn’t just piling up yards against bad competition.

In 2002, Jones ran for 173 yards and two touchdowns against Virginia, then followed that up with 165 yards against Maryland later that season. But the craziest thing about Greg Jones wasn’t even his stats.

IT WAS HOW HE GOT THOSE YARDS.

This man wasn’t interested in running out of bounds. He wasn’t trying to avoid contact. He was looking for somebody to HIT. The stiff arms, the broken tackles, the defenders getting absolutely flattened trying to bring him down.

If you watched Florida State football in the early 2000s, you already know what kind of problem No. 6 was.

And despite suffering a serious knee injury during his junior season, Jones came back for his senior year before becoming a second-round NFL Draft pick in 2004.

Florida State has had some incredible running backs over the years, but there was something different about watching Greg Jones run the football.

THE DEFINITION OF OLD-SCHOOL, PHYSICAL FOOTBALL.

No dancing around. No unnecessary moves. Just a grown man running through anybody standing in his way.
