The immigration reform and control act(IRCA) was passed by the 99th US congress and signed into law by Present Ronald Reagan in 1986. This act legalized undocumented immigrants who had been working in the US. A republican congress and a republican president granted citizenship to nearly 2.7 million people. A republican congress and a republican president granted citizenship to my parents. Because of this act, we have never known the fear of what it would be like for our family to be separated. For armed officers to come into our home or our schools, rip us from the life we know, and force us to start over.
I want to be clear: to publicize living in México as a punishment is to do a disservice to a country that has increasingly enacted federal legislation to protect the rights of women and members of the LGBTQ community, as well as prioritized environmental conservation. However, for those who choose to live in the United States, the IRCA has been the only reasonable, feasible path to citizenship for almost 40 years. While beneficiaries of this act were legalized in 18 months, the average path to legalization since then averages 12 years. Amnesty under the IRCA was not found to encourage long-term illegal immigration(Linder 2011, Orrenius& Zavodny 2001), and reduced property crime by 3-5% (Baker, 2015). At the very least, it is evidence that party lines do not have to dictate the actions of government towards a hardworking group of human beings.
Immigrants built this country. Immigrants keep your lights on. We harvest your food, save the lives of your loved ones, defend you in court, create art, and enrich this country in every way possible. I wanted to show everyone what happens when a family of immigrants is afforded the right to citizenship. We overcome. We thrive. We succeed.
