Elon Musk has launched a sharp attack on India’s telecom regulatory system, openly questioning billionaire Mukesh Ambani’s influence over the country as his satellite internet company Starlink continues to face delays in launching commercial services. In an explosive post on X on October 8, Musk asked, “Is Ambani the real boss of India?”, escalating an already heated confrontation over India’s telecom market. Musk questioned why Starlink was still awaiting permission to launch despite spending five years complying with Indian regulations. He claimed that Starlink was licensed in more than 165 countries and asked why India continued to hold up its operations. The controversy began when Musk accused certain “oligarchs”, a term referring to wealthy and powerful individuals who can influence government decisions, of deliberately obstructing Starlink to protect their control over India’s telecom market. Without initially naming anyone, Musk alleged that powerful businessmen were attempting to maintain a monopoly over Indian consumers. Calling the situation “a crime against the people of India”, he argued that Starlink could provide affordable, high-speed internet to millions, particularly in remote areas with limited connectivity. His remarks have brought attention to Reliance Jio, controlled by Mukesh Ambani, and Bharti Airtel, led by Sunil Bharti Mittal. Both companies dominate India’s telecom industry and are pursuing satellite connectivity businesses of their own, placing them in potential competition with Musk’s Starlink. However, the Indian government has firmly rejected Musk’s accusations, describing suggestions of discriminatory treatment as “baseless and misconceived.” The Ministry of Communications maintained that Starlink, Jio’s satellite venture and Bharti-backed OneWeb were all undergoing similar security assessments before spectrum could be assigned. The dispute has now moved beyond regulatory approvals into a public confrontation between some of the world’s wealthiest businessmen.
If you want to know what determination looks like, meet Shabana Basij-Rasikh.   Shabana was six years old when the Taliban first seized power 30 years ago and banned girls in Afghanistan from attending school. Undeterred, she continued her education in secret schools across Kabul, then went on to graduate magna cum laude from Middlebury College in Vermont and earn a master’s degree in public policy from Oxford.   But Shabana didn’t stop at pursuing her own education. While still in college, she co-founded @sola.afghanistan, Afghanistan’s first boarding school for girls, which attracted students from nearly every province in the country.   When the Taliban returned to power in 2021, they shut girls out of the classroom once again. Yet Shabana fought to keep her school alive, leading the SOLA community’s evacuation to Rwanda.   In the years since, the Taliban have enacted a brutal campaign against women’s rights, barring them from universities, most jobs, traveling without a male relative, and even speaking and singing in public. But Shabana has not given up on her mission. SOLA continues to educate Afghan girls in exile from its campus in Rwanda, and it reaches girls in Afghanistan through online learning.   I’ve been honored to get to know Shabana through Pivotal’s Global Leaders initiative, which provides visionary changemakers with funds to support work they believe in, and I couldn’t think of a more important person to interview for International Day of the Girl. She knows exactly what’s at stake when girls are denied an education—and what’s possible when they can get one.   Read my Q&A with @sbasijrasikh at the link in my bio. #internationaldayofthegirl
