The giant anteater population in Brazil is declining due to an increase in roadside collisions, with 766 of the elusive creatures found dead along highways in Mato Grosso do Sul from 2017 to 2020, including this one that was struck by a vehicle. To document the threats facing giant anteaters, National Geographic Explorer and photographer @fernando.faciole spent years following the species, splitting his time between the roads and rehabilitation centers. By photographing anteaters lying dead on road shoulders, he hopes to show the major threat these animals face.
