You need one to watch or record live TV on any channel, including live sports or to use BBC iPlayer. That applies even if you already pay for Sky, Netflix or Prime. But not everyone has to pay. If you only watch on-demand Netflix, Prime or ordinary YouTube videos, and don’t use BBC iPlayer, you currently don’t need a licence. That distinction matters as more people move away from traditional television. Around 540,000 fewer licences were in force in 2025/26. The BBC also recorded a £121 million deficit that year, although that isn’t a loss caused solely by cancellations. To address the funding pressure, a wider licence fee is being considered that could bring streaming-only households into the system—even those already paying for subscriptions and never watching the BBC. MPs have recommended broadening the fee from 2028, potentially reducing the amount each household pays. This has NOT become law, and no new charge has been confirmed.
