When we visit our family homes, we exchange pleasantries—words woven into our minds like a familiar song. Words that we can pass on to the next generation, just as they were passed to us. But there was a time when our mother tongue was threatened. The simplest exchange of words, so deeply rooted in us, that could have not existed.

Today we celebrate Ekushey February, a day born from the sacrifices of those in Bangladesh who fought to preserve their right to speak our language. Their sacrifice in 1952 sparked a global movement that led to the establishment of International Mother Language Day in 2000, a day to celebrate and protect the diversity of languages around the world.

This year is especially significant as we celebrate the Silver Jubilee, marking 25 years of International Mother Language Day. The theme for 2025 highlights the importance of languages in building more inclusive and sustainable societies. It reminds us that language is more than words—it is identity, history, and connection. May we honor that forever.

Let us continue to speak, learn, and teach our children the language of our ancestors, honoring our martyrs sacrifices for generations to come. Joy Bangla!

Hi, I really enjoy the content on this account but there is no ethical use of AI art, and it would make more sense to use publicly available photographs, or the artwork of real artists with permission and credits, for posts such as this. If I am mistaken about this art being AI, it would be great to also know who the artist is!

As someone who campaigned for Palestine for more than 20 years without even knowing about 1971 and that my parents are both genocide survivors - what I learnt the hard way was that Palestinians by and large do not recognise 1971 because it was an Arab proxy genocide. They actually erase Bangladesh, Bangladeshis and Bangladeshi history and activism in general and for Palestine because recognising Bangladeshi sovereignty would mean humanising Bangladeshis who are they see as inferior Muslims and who are dehumanised and exploited in Arab states that send blood stained oil money to them and are their “fellow Arabs”. The rhetoric “Solidarity is not transactional” is abusive, incorrect and inconsistent with liberation… yours, a child of 1971 who refuses to be silent ✌🏾 🇧🇩 ❤️
