I don’t have a big fancy kitchen with an island in the middle. We don’t have enough bedrooms for each child to have their own. The floors aren’t real hardwood, and the trim hasn’t been painted since we moved in.

But this weekend my neighbor walked over with homemade pumpkin coffee cake right as I was putting the kettle on for tea. A few came over for a game night that had all the kids up far too late. I walk my dog every morning with two neighbors I now consider dearest friends. There was no school today and the streets were filled with roaming kids on every manner of bike and scooter.

These are all things I didn’t know I was getting when we bought our first home almost a decade ago. And now, I fear we can never move.

Because everything my house lacks, it makes up for in the people who surround it.
