An orange haze is blanketing Indonesia’s Central Kalimantan as wildfires rage across the province. ⁣ ⁣ The smog has drifted throughout the region, obscuring Singapore’s skyline and shutting down schools in Malaysia.
In an unusual twist to Dussehra celebrations, a massive 30-foot-tall cockroach effigy is set to be burnt at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan alongside the traditional effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad. According to a report by The Times of India, the giant cockroach will be part of this year’s Ramlila celebrations, adding an unconventional symbol to the centuries-old tradition of Ravan Dahan. The organisers reportedly maintain that the cockroach represents filth and dirt, and that its burning is intended to symbolise the elimination of uncleanliness from society. The committee has also denied any political motive behind the decision, although these specific statements could not be independently verified. The development comes amid an interesting political backdrop. Delhi Police recently removed Jantar Mantar from its list of designated protest sites and identified Ramlila Maidan as one of three alternative venues. The decision followed demonstrations involving the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), whose supporters have recently been detained during protests in the capital. While the cockroach effigy has attracted attention because of this coincidence, there is no verified evidence establishing a connection between the Dussehra display and the political organisation. Traditionally, Dussehra marks the victory of good over evil, with effigies of Ravan, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad set ablaze. This year, Delhi’s celebrations are preparing to add an entirely different figure to the flames, one that organisers say symbolises the fight against filth.
