In Verona, N.J., a 12-foot, laser-eyed animatronic skeleton groans and shifts its gargantuan frame over a graveyard of skulls. It is the towering centerpiece of Anthony Carrara’s front yard.

Carrara and his wife are Halloween devotees who frequent haunted houses and horror-themed bars. This year, they ramped up their home display, deploying a grim reaper, a zombie, animal skeletons and Oogie Boogie from “The Nightmare Before Christmas.”

It was all too much for one neighbor. Within two days of putting up his decorations in late September, Carrara, 40, received an anonymous note from a local parent complaining that the ghoulish display was terrorizing their children as they walked to school.

“They beg to walk on the other side of the street and close their eyes until we’re past,” the letter read. “I don’t love the safety implications of them focusing harder on avoiding decorations rather than watching out for cars.”

“Really not trying to be intrusive,” the letter concluded. The author also left a bag of candy.

Tensions are flaring in suburbia as Halloween decorations cross the line from festive to nightmarish. Entire front yards are morphing into wastelands of decapitated bodies, with zombies holding bloody axes and severed pig heads. Some Halloween-lovers spend thousands of dollars on props that fill their basements or attics for the rest of the year.

Weary neighbors are pushing back, but for many Halloween lovers, decorating is a passion that can’t be stifled.
