3 weeks ago I thought this was it, the pain I was feeling was so excruciating I had to get myself to the emergency room. CT scans, x-rays , thoracenthesis done…I’m still here!!! I’m giving thanks to the King of Kings for keeping me. This is the post I didn’t want to write, because it’s scary. But I’d rather you be scared now than at 42 in a GI’s office.

Colon cancer is the number one cancer killer of Americans under 50. Not breast, not lung, not skin. Colon. Overall cancer deaths in this age group fell 44% since 1990. This one rose every year since 2005, and cases are doubling every decade. Genetics explains a fifth of it. Something in how we live explains the rest.

Last year, researchers read 981 tumors from 11 countries and found a toxin called colibactin, made by a strain of E. coli that lives in the gut, 3.3 times more often in patients under 40. The damage happens in childhood, then waits.

I had E. coli. A lot of my clients did. And here’s what I know from the inside: the bacteria isn’t the whole story. It needs a place to live. A raw, inflamed, leaky lining is that place. IBS, IBD, years of “just bloating,” chronic inflammation nobody took seriously: that’s the soil. IBD alone roughly doubles colon cancer risk.

And we keep feeding the soil. The WHO put processed meat in Group 1, the same category as tobacco, in 2015. Two slices of bacon a day is an 18% higher risk. Eleven years later it’s still on every “high protein” breakfast and still being advised to people with IBD.

I’m not posting this to make you afraid of food. Avoiding more foods is what keeps you sick. I’m posting it because inflammation is the one thing in this story you can actually change, and the earlier you change it the less it costs you. Repair the lining. Calm the inflammation. Rebuild the bacteria that crowd the bad ones out. In that order.
