I’ve been thinking a lot about what to say about Gigi in a long-form type of way. I can’t believe how lucky I was to have a grandmother who loved and cared so deeply about every person she knew. What great fortune that I was blessed enough to be one of her grandchildren! The memories are countless, and so too are the voicemails—whether it was on my birthday or just a Tuesday. I’ve kept them all.

And all those stats I track? Everything that goes that on the board? That love of sports stats 100% came from her. She was the original numbers keeper, whether it was on a steno pad or the side of a newspaper.

She supported my dreams every step of the way. She loved me even more than I can fathom, which I know is how each member of the family feels. She never wavered in her faith or her kindness. The extra mile that people take to show much they love you? That came naturally to Gigi.

Gigi was sunshine. She loved hummingbirds, and marveled at them every morning when she was having her breakfast. She learned to support the Tide (unless they were playing A&M) because she knew it made me happy. I’ll never forget when Johnny Manziel came to BDS and beat Alabama. Gigi called me from the seats, crying, to apologize because “this wasn’t how it was supposed to go.” She was worried about how sad I might be because her team beat mine. Her first thought, after what should’ve been a truly joyous moment, was how it made me feel. Oh, and she loved Bama U too, and she adored listening to and watching Alabama Softball because she knew how much the program means to me.

I hope she understood how much she meant to me and to everyone who knew her. How much her strength held us all together, through every wave life tossed at us. How much the love she showed the world was shown right back to her. I’ll miss you so much, Gigi. Thank you for pouring into me and making me who I am today. Thank you for teaching me about grace and humility. Love you oodles. I guarantee Heaven has some incredible spots to watch games and plenty of steno pads and newspapers to keep track of the stats.
