✨ ¡Felicitaciones a todas! ✨

Controversial things I do that wouldn’t be considered “healthy”- drink a small amount of caffeine at night.

Caffeine as an Adaptogen: How and Why Caffeine Promotes Relaxation and Energy in Some, vs. Stimulation in Others:

Caffeine’s adaptogenic qualities can be understood through three metabolic states rather than simply high vs. low metabolism. Its effects depend on liver glycogen, thyroid status and the body’s ability to meet increased energy demand.

Caffeine increases cAMP and oxidative metabolism and mimics some effects associated with thyroid hormone (T3) and progesterone. It also influences serotonin. Because it increases fuel demand, metabolic condition determines whether it feels relaxing or stimulating.

In a hypothyroid state, metabolic rate and liver glycogen may be low. Caffeine increases energy demand, but limited stored glucose may trigger adrenaline and cortisol to prevent blood sugar from dropping, causing cold extremities, anxiety, palpitations and energy crashes. Pairing caffeine with saturated fat and fast-acting carbohydrates like sugar provides fuel. Sodium or baking soda may further support this response, as in Mexican Coke.

In a hypothyroid, hyperadrenergic state, someone may feel wired but exhausted, relying on adrenaline and cortisol to maintain energy and blood sugar. Caffeine without food may intensify this stress response. With adequate carbohydrates, however, caffeine may feel calming or even cause sleepiness as the body receives fuel to meet energy demand. This can reveal an underlying low metabolic rate, making further thyroid support and adequate energy supplies important.

With healthy thyroid function, T4-to-T3 conversion and robust liver glycogen stores, the body can meet caffeine’s increased energy demand by releasing glucose. This may support sustained clarity, stamina and body temperature without the same emergency stress response.

Paired with sugar, salt and/or fat, caffeine may support a higher resting metabolic rate. It may also be helpful at night, when stress hormones naturally rise, by providing glucose to support energy metabolism and deep, restorative sleep.
