Hunter green: the unofficial colour of the 1990s.

If you were around then, you probably didn’t even notice how completely this one shade took over.

Cars? Hunter green.
Leather sofas? Hunter green.
Coats and backpacks? Hunter green.
Bathrooms? Absolutely hunter green.
And somebody, somewhere, was definitely painting an entire wall with it.

It was particularly dominant in early-to-mid 90s interiors, where dark green was often paired with burgundy, brass or gold details, honey-coloured oak and enough patterned wallpaper borders to circle the house twice.

Kitchens got hunter-green cabinets or walls. Living rooms got enormous dark-green leather sofas. Bathrooms had matching green mats, towels and occasionally even coordinated toilet accessories.

The National Kitchen & Bath Association has described green as “king of the kitchen” during the decade, with hunter green becoming one of the defining shades of 90s décor.

And it went well beyond interiors. Deep metallic greens appeared all over cars, clothing, bags and other everyday products, giving the colour that slightly preppy, outdoorsy, “expensive” look the decade loved.

Looking back, it’s remarkable how normal all of this seemed.

Every generation gets a colour palette.

The 70s had avocado and harvest gold.
The 80s loved pastels.
And for a large chunk of the 90s…

Apparently we all wanted to live inside a forest. 🌲😂
