An Indian Army lieutenant colonel posted at Army Headquarters in New Delhi is facing a court martial over alleged contact with Pakistan's ISI and the presence of banned applications on his smartphone, according to a report in The Indian Express. The officer serves in the Staff Duties Directorate and is currently attached to 226 Company Army Service Corps Supply Type G. The nine charges against him cover the period when he worked as General Staff Officer 1 at the same directorate. The first three charges under Section 45 of the Army Act which deals with unbecoming conduct allege that between 24 December 2019 and 16 September 2022 he maintained contact with two numbers described as suspected Pakistan intelligence operative lines and with ten other Pakistan based numbers using the +92 country code. He is also accused of contacting a foreign national identified only as Anatoly between January 2020 and August 2022 without permission. The Indian Express report does not describe what the officer is alleged to have done during these contacts. It also does not confirm whether the people he spoke with were in fact operatives of Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence. Given the nine charges and the officer's senior rank, it is highly likely that he passed information to the ISI. This is not the first such case. A month ago a senior Indian Air Force wing commander was arrested in Delhi on allegations of passing sensitive defence related information to Pakistan’s ISI after being caught in a honey trap. #espionage #spy #spying #ISI #intelligence
